House of Cards are a Folk/Americana band from Norfolk, VA performing original songs and not-so-common covers. Influences include Rosanne Cash, Mandolin Orange, Sarah Jarosz, Suzanne Vega, and Gillian Welch.
House of Cards songs feature close harmonies by guitarist Cheryl Starr and bassist/mandolin/ukulele player Kate Landman, lead work by electric guitarist Drew Landman, and percussion by Jay Sanchez.
Lead singer and primary songwriter Cheryl Starr is a middle school science teacher who hails from Kentucky with traditional music roots. She started out playing fiddle tunes and folk songs and has blended those elements into her own writing. Drew Landman is an engineering professor who first tried jazz guitar as a hobby in college. Kate Landman is a product of public school music programs, having spent 14 years playing trombone. She later took up bass guitar in college and more recently mandolin and ukulele. Jay Sanchez is a graduate of West Virginia University having studied music and video production. He now works in television. Starr and the Landmans started playing together during after-hours jam sessions on a musical tour of Ireland organized by a mutual friend. Sanchez joined the band after sitting in at another friend’s open mic party – a natural fit.
The band has just released their self-titled debut EP featuring six of their original songs. Recorded at Master Sound Studios in Virginia Beach, the project was engineered and mastered by Rob Ulsh and Kate Landman.
