This annual event is TFFM’s way to reach out to those in need. By lending our support to the The Judeo Christian Outreach Center, we help them to empower homeless families and individuals to recover from crisis situations and return to being self-supporting, productive, and independent members of our community.
The word ceili (pron. KAY-lee) is a Gaelic word meaning a party with music & dancing. The Flowing Tide Ceili Band is an ensemble of talented young musicians from Hampton Roads, VA, who play traditional Irish, Scottish & American fiddle tunes. The FTCB had its debut performance in the 2008 Virginia Arts Festival's International Tattoo. They were featured with the Virginia Symphony in their "Irish Spring Fling" concert in March, 2009, and perform in concerts throughout the community. In fall 2010, they opened for The Martin Family Band in Virginia Beach.
Carol Thomas Downing is Flowing Tide’s founder & arranger. She has been fiddling since the 1970’s, when she first learned Irish & old-time American styles from master fiddlers in the Baltimore/Washington area. During her time in Baltimore, Carol performed extensively and recorded two CD's with the acclaimed folk trio "Cross Country." She loves collecting fiddle tunes and singing traditional ballads. Carol is a regular at local Irish sessions & presents fiddle workshops around Hampton Roads, VA. She performs solo, with her Celtic band, "Sporting Molly" and with the contra dance band, "Cutie & the Hot Wings." Carol has degrees in Vocal Performance & Music Education, and has been teaching voice, Suzuki violin & traditional fiddling for 35 years. She is also founder and artistic director of the Virginia Children’s Chorus, based in Norfolk, VA.
