Scott Slay along with James Adkins, and the Lazar Brothers, Steve & Dale will be bringing their musical genius to the library for an evening of fine bluegrass and Americana music.
Named after James Adkins' original tune, "Big Virginia Sky", the group formed in late 2012 by accident when they threw themselves together to play a wedding. Because they enjoyed playing together so much, the group began booking concerts without a name and was featured on several radio shows prior.
Two years later, with the inclusion of Lonesome River Band’s front man and 5-time IBMA Banjo Player of the Year, Sammy Shelor, the group is playing all over with a unique, bluegrass-inspired Americana sound. Members of BVS have played with Edgar Meyer, Glen Phillips, Katie Rogers, Alan Jackson, Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers, and other popular artists.
They have also collaborated with local singer/songwriter Logan Vath and Pensacola, FL native Tanya Gallagher to add a unique twist to their lyrics. The frequently requested tune, "Whiskey and Long Talks" was written by James and Logan and features an indescribably personal and soulful sound. Big Virginia Sky is heavily influenced by the Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek. As a nationally-recognized group, "Big Virginia Sky" features James Adkins on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, Scott Slay on mandolin and vocals, Steve Lazar on upright bass and harmony, Dale Lazar on drums.
